Abstract

The article reveals the attitude of people, who live in the non-capital industrial cities of Tatarstan to their own city, to its inhabitants and their aspirations to stay in the city or leave it. The quantitative survey method revealed a contradiction between the relatively high degree of people's satisfaction with their life in these cities, their commitment to the local community, and readiness of a significant proportion of city dwellers to change their place of residence. The analysis of cross-variables revealed the average interconnectedness of the studied phenomena. Problem-oriented group interviews in families helped to clarify the situation. They showed that departure orientations can be combined with a high appreciation of positive changes in the city, self-identification with it and with the urban community. They also made it possible to reveal a complex set of factors that influence such a choice, starting from economic (higher wages and the level of well-being in general), educational (the presence of higher schools and secondary vocational schools that can provide quality education and a range of opportunities after graduation), and sociocultural incentives (development of the healthcare system, comfort and safety of the urban environment, satisfaction of cultural needs, etc.) and the possibility of self-realization. The study also revealed, that some young people have stereotyped ideas about the benefits of living in metropolitan cities. In this regard, we can conclude that the “retention” of the population in the city, especially intellectual and creative young people, depends, among other things, on the creation and development of an educational cluster of secondary and higher education, the implementation of various innovative projects and the formation of highly professional specialists teams as well as on the degree of saturation of the cultural space of industrial cities with modern creative events involving local cultural producers.
